Discounting food

An incident happened this lunchtime which brought up the issue of discounting food. This crops up from time to time in such ways as groups wanting a discount on the basis that there are a lot of them, for example. As it happens we have a policy to never discount in any way. We are here to make a living, after all, but not only that, too much effort and research, shopping and love goes into the whole process of getting the food to the table, I don’t want to devalue our work at all.

We offer a ‘formule de midi’ or lunch deal at 13,50€. This is primarily aimed at people who are working and locals who can’t be bothered to cook. However anyone can order it of-course. It is for two courses and includes a glass of wine and coffee. It is a good deal, but it would be dreaming to expect expensive ingredients or that it will be very elaborate. Basically I keep it simple.

However, quite often, like today, we get people trying to tailor-make their own midday formulas with stuff off our more expensive menu. I find this really depressing. People choose to eat here but then don’t want to pay for it. This particular person had travelled an hour and a half by bus especially to eat here (she claimed), she has been several times, so having taken so much effort to get here, why does she not consider the food not worth paying for?

Frankly I would prefer that people like that go and eat a cheap pizza down the road.
