This winter has seen our turnover increase by about a third – probably as a result of the weather and that we are a bit better known. However it is so sporadic – one day quiet and the next we are turning people down in droves. The answer would be to have access to someone who would work for us. Our waitress from the last two seasons makes it clear that she doesn’t want to work in the winter (she doesn’t have to, she gets unemployment benefit anyway) and we need someone we can call on for those crazy moments.
Well, dear reader, hopefully we have solved the problem, although they can’t start until April – we could really do with her now! However, fingers crossed that it will work out and that we will have a permanent way of maximising the busier periods. She is an English girl, which we are slightly uncomfortable with, not wanting to be seen as spurning the French workforce. However, we can truthfully say that she is the best person for the job that we have come across this winter. She speaks French and is moving to Vernet to join her boyfriend so will be here on a permanent basis and is aware that we shall be wanting her to work pretty much all year round, especially for weekend services. She will be living within a 10 min walk and so will be perfect! At least in theory. She is jolly pleased also, as she will get into the French system through us and get a social security number and medical cover. So fingers crossed it all works out.
So the plan is to take a short break at the end of this month/beginning of next and then reopen with a few spring changes to the menu and a new helper. Hooray!
