Crowd control

Crikey, August is all about crowd control, really. Vernet is just mobbed, the campsites are full, people are everywhere, and it’s a bit like we’re the only restaurant in town. I’m sure the others are just as busy, but we could really do with a full-time receptionist now! The phone goes all the time, and we’re mostly saying ‘sorry we’re full’. We can accept up to 28 people- that’s all we can seat and about all I can manage in the kitchen which isn’t a great deal-we’re very small,which is probably part of our charm but people can sound really indignant and outraged when you refuse them. Some don’t believe you and then try to book over the internet or phone again. And some try to bully us a bit by telling us to find a little corner somewhere..or that so-and-so, a regular customer, recommended them therefore we HAVE to take them and so on. What can you do but put on your best customer smile, stick your ground and apologise insincerely.

Beginning of service sees Dave and employee of the day welcoming guests and me fielding calls, taking reservations and making entrees all at the same time! Thank heavens it’s only August once a year. And thank also heavens for the sleep function I recently discovered on our phones and ansaphone. At least we can sleep peacefully – people really do phone restaurants at 7.30am for reservations. Encroyable!
